"She taught English a a Second Language to French-speaking adults for ten years in rural Quebec, trained science teachers when she was a Peace Corps volunteer in India, and trained Peace Corps volunteers in nonfor- mal education and community development in West Africa and the South Pacific. She received her master's and doctoral degrees from the Center for International Education at the University of Massachusetts at Am- herst, where she directed programs in American culture and language for inter- national graduate students and scholars, trained U.S. business people to work more effectively abroad, and developed and taught graduate-level writing courses for interna- tional and U.S. students.
